ANDY LOPPAS

Position: Director and Principal of Alexander College

Graduation Year: 1983

Current Role

What is your current role, and where do you work?

Director and Principal of Alexander College, leading its academic development, strategic planning, and institutional growth.

BACKGROUND

Can you share a bit about your personal and educational background?

I was born in Larnaca, and most of my primary school years were spent in Australia before returning to Cyprus. After graduating from the American Academy Larnaca in 1983, I pursued studies in Graphic and Advertising Design, completing a Higher Diploma, an HND in Communication Design, and later a Bachelor of Science in Advertising Design from the State University of New York (Empire State College).

I continued my academic development with Postgraduate qualifications in Design Practice and Business Research methods, culminating in a Master of Science in Business Management from the University of the West of England.

CAREER JOURNEY

How did your career path unfold from graduation to where you are today?

My career began in creative fields such as Photography, Music, and Graphic design. I moved into Education in the late 1980s, teaching Design for more than a decade before becoming Director of the Cypoly School of Art and Design. In 2004, I founded Alexander College and went on to lead it as Director and Principal.

Alongside my educational career, I served on several boards—including the American Academy and the Cyprus Sports Organization—and completed 7.5 years as a Municipal Councilor for Larnaca, where I chaired the Traffic and Roads Committee.

ACHIEVEMENTS

What professional achievement are you most proud of and why?

I am particularly proud of guiding Alexander College from its founding through more than two decades of growth and transformation. Building strong academic partnerships, expanding programmes, and shaping a vibrant educational community, has been deeply rewarding. Seeing the impact on students and the wider community remains one of my greatest professional satisfactions.

AAL IMPACT

How did your experience with AAL contribute to your personal or professional growth?

The American Academy played a defining role in shaping my values and work ethic. It gave me a strong academic foundation, but also instilled discipline, responsibility, and a sense of community. These qualities influenced every stage of my career—from creative work to educational leadership and public service.

ADVICE

What advice would you give to current AAL students?

Stay curious, stay disciplined, and make the most of the opportunities around you. The habits and values you build now will guide you throughout your life. Don’t be afraid to explore different paths—your journey may take unexpected turns, but dedication and integrity will always lead you forward.
